One of the most spectacular of Yellowstone’s colorful hot springs is the Grand Prismatic Springs. It is over 200 feet wide and with temperatures around 160oF, it is often covered in a blanket of steam. This spring pours about 500 gallons of water, heated by magma from the active volcano, into the Firehole River every minute and provides for a mystical experience.
The colors around the springs are provided by heat-loving microorganisms – thermophiles. With the energy from the sun, these microorganisms show off their colorful pigments. The blue center is caused by sunlight scattered by suspended fine particles is in the water.
I think I arrived at Grand Prismatic Springs at the right time. Just I was about to leave three (3) tour buses showed up. Have you ever notice that everyone on the tour bus has new athletic shoes?; they must have a stop at an outlet of their schedule (lol). On my way south again, I stopped at Kepler Cascades; a beautiful spot between Old Faithful and Prismatic Springs.
Off to Grant Village, on Lake Yellowstone, for the night. The campground closes after this weekend for the winter – then south to Lewis Lake before leaving Yellowstone for the Grand Tetons. I am a little disappointed that it hasn’t snowed (I said “a little”). Good thing I bought the snow scraper and brush when I was in South Dakota; otherwise it would have snowed like a big dog.
